About Our KIMS Collaborating Center
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) re-designated the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing as a Collaborating Center for Nursing Knowledge, Information Management and Sharing for a third term (2009-2012). The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing is the first PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center concentrating specifically on nursing information and communication technologies. As a Collaborating Center, IJHN engages in national and international activities that respond to nursing information, communication and knowledge management needs. As one example, our Collaborating Center hosts the Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery (GANM) which supports the professional development of nurses and midwives through collaborative networking and education.

Our Terms of Reference for 2009-2012:
  • Facilitate equitable access to information and scientific knowledge via appropriate and feasible technologies, for the promotion and support of global nursing and midwifery communities of practice and other ICT supported nursing activities.
  • Promote the development of the Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery Initiative through facilitating and strengthening collaborative activities via ICT methodologies, including the leadership and maintenance of the Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery (GANM).
  • Contribute to the growth, development and deployment of learning and informed online environments to improve nursing, health, and healthcare globally.
  • Collaborate in the planning, conduction and dissemination of nursing and patient-centered research to improve health and nursing care though collection and analysis of the data, information and knowledge of nursing practice.
