Are you interested in exploring a new nursing role? Are you looking for a specialized certification? As nurses and health care providers, we know that there's always more to learn. The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing offers specialty courses to meet your unique needs. We invite you to use our programs to learn, advance, and grow.
Guided Care Nursing
Guided Care is a practical, interdisciplinary model of health care designed to improve the quality of life and effectiveness of health care for persons with multiple comorbidities. It uses best practices in chronic disease management, case management, self-management, lifestyle modification, caregiver education and support, transitional care, and geriatric evaluation and management. Guided Care Nurses most often work in primary care in partnership with several providers, empowering patients and caregivers and coordinating patient-centered, cost-effective care.
The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing provides a six-week online course and examination leading to the American Nurses Credentialing Center's new Certificate in Guided Care Nursing. The course was developed in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with funding from the Hartford Foundation. It is endorsed by the National Gerontological Nursing Association and sponsored by SeniorBridge. The Guided Care Nursing Course features core and elective modules, live webinars and simulations, and expert support from IJHN faculty. Download more information about the course. Forensic Nursing
Forensic Nurse Examiners provide expert care to the sexual assault patient. The forensic nursing role encompasses direct services to individual clients, consultation services to nursing, medical and law related agencies, interaction with victim advocates, and expert court room testimony in areas dealing with trauma and questioned death. Research has shown that information gathered during a thorough forensic examination significantly impacts the legal outcomes of sexual assault cases.
The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing partners with the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault to provide the only program in Maryland offering forensic nurse examiner adult training. Led by Daniel Sheridan, PhD, RN, students learn through use of lectures, case studies, discussions, group activities and a mock courtroom scenario. This training completes the didactic portion of the Maryland certification requirements. We also offer students the opportunity to participate in an optional lab experience where they can practice, under supervision, two speculum insertions on trained medical teaching associates. The lab experience will count towards two of the ten supervised speculum exams required for certification in the State of Maryland.
Danger Assessment Training
The Danger Assessment is a tool developed by Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN to identify women at risk for intimate partner violence. It has been used for 25 years by health care providers, law enforcement personnel, and domestic violence advocates.
The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing offers on-line training and certification in the full version of the Danger Assessment, which includes scoring and interpretation system. Visit the Danger Assessment website to learn more about training and certification, or to download the basic screening tool.
