Nurses who work with patients with life threatening diseases and are interested in developing their skills in patient advocacy and navigation. |
When our patients are diagnosed with a life threatening condition or are suffering with the onset of a new chronic illness, they feel lost, overwhelmed, and usually very stressed. Their ability to retain information is limited. Their knowledge base of the disease is usually sparse but their need to learn and understand is great.
Patients benefit from someone serving as their advocate. The patient advocate ensures patients are receiving information so they are empowered and can participate in the decision making about their care and treatment; helps the patient navigate the health care system so that needed tests and appointments are provided in a timely manner; and speaks with and for them when they are not able to speak for themselves due to feeling overwhelmed and distressed.
This seminar is designed to provide the framework for nurses interested in creating a Patient Advocacy Program for their patients. The Breast Center at Johns Hopkins programs will serve as a model to follow for replicating advocacy, education, navigation, and quality of care.
